Understanding how PAHs are

Specifically we are interested inthe biodegradation of creosote, wood preservative composed primarilyof polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs such as naphthalene and phenanthrene. Our field site has been EagleHarbor, located relatively close to the University of Washington inPuget Sound. The EPA arranged for placementof clean sediment over the harbors contaminated seabed in an effort tocontain the toxic compounds capping. This harbor was contaminated with creosote from defunctwood treatment plant located on its shore and has been designated an EPASuperfund Site. It continues with support from individualgrants and the University.. Creosote and its components are toxic substances whichhave been shown to have mutagenic properties.
